The Best way to reach Leh Ladakh:
By Air:
Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (Leh Airport):
The only airport to Ladakh is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh.
You have to take a direct flight from from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar to reach Leh.
Several airlines are available at reasonable rates.
The only reason I recommend you to take a flight is because of the breathtaking views you get of the majestic Himalayas during your flight.
By Road:
Manali to Leh Highway:
The Manali to Leh highway is one of the most popular routes to reach Ladakh by road. Its around 430kms and around 12hrs of journey. You would at least need one stop over on your way.
It is open from June to October when the weather conditions are favorable.
The journey takes you through beautiful landscapes but involves high mountain passes.
A new road from Manali to Leh is which is around 100kms shorter than the current route.
Srinagar to Leh Highway:
The Srinagar to Leh highway is another road route, and it is open from June to November. This route is around 420kms and takes almost 10hrs.
This route takes you through the stunning Kashmir Valley and involves crossing the Zoji La pass which is the world's most dangerous roads.
If you are planning to tour kashmir and Ladakh at the same time, this would be the perfect road trip.
By Bus:
State Transport Buses:
State-run buses operate between Srinagar and Leh and between Manali and Leh. These cost up around 500INR to 1500INR
The bus journey is long and can be tiring, but it is an economical option.
Not suited for families though, solo travelers can travel by this way.
Important Tips:
Acclimatization: Ladakh is at a high altitude(9800ft and more), so it's important to acclimatize yourself to prevent altitude sickness. You might not see you sickness kicking in, but after 2 days you would be bed sick for the next 3 days, So spending a day or two in Leh before heading to higher altitudes is a safer option. Using this time wisely you can explore the Leh city which would take you 1 whole day. (Check our travel vlog to see what to do in Leh for a day).
Permits: You need permits to enter any area of Ladakh. Permits can be taken completely online by paying the fees. It is better to take the permits before hand to the places you would be exploring in Ladakh.
Weather Conditions: The weather conditions over here are very drastic., if you are traveling by road be ready to challenge this weather as it can snow any moment or be ready to expect a landslide. Roads may be closed due to snowfall or other adverse weather conditions.
Health Precautions: Carry essential medications, especially for altitude sickness. This is recommended by others opinion. In my opinion and my expertise these medications weren't of any use as we were prone to mountain sickness even after taking them. Vomiting is very normal, so nothing to be scarred of.
