The Best way to reach Leh Ladakh:

By Air:

  1. Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (Leh Airport):

    • The only airport to Ladakh is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh.

    • You have to take a direct flight from from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar to reach Leh.

    • Several airlines are available at reasonable rates.

    • The only reason I recommend you to take a flight is because of the breathtaking views you get of the majestic Himalayas during your flight.

By Road:

  1. Manali to Leh Highway:

    • The Manali to Leh highway is one of the most popular routes to reach Ladakh by road. Its around 430kms and around 12hrs of journey. You would at least need one stop over on your way.

    • It is open from June to October when the weather conditions are favorable.

    • The journey takes you through beautiful landscapes but involves high mountain passes.

    • A new road from Manali to Leh is which is around 100kms shorter than the current route.

  2. Srinagar to Leh Highway:

    • The Srinagar to Leh highway is another road route, and it is open from June to November. This route is around 420kms and takes almost 10hrs.

    • This route takes you through the stunning Kashmir Valley and involves crossing the Zoji La pass which is the world's most dangerous roads.

    • If you are planning to tour kashmir and Ladakh at the same time, this would be the perfect road trip.

By Bus:

  1. State Transport Buses:

    • State-run buses operate between Srinagar and Leh and between Manali and Leh. These cost up around 500INR to 1500INR

    • The bus journey is long and can be tiring, but it is an economical option.

    • Not suited for families though, solo travelers can travel by this way.

Important Tips:

  • Acclimatization: Ladakh is at a high altitude(9800ft and more), so it's important to acclimatize yourself to prevent altitude sickness. You might not see you sickness kicking in, but after 2 days you would be bed sick for the next 3 days, So spending a day or two in Leh before heading to higher altitudes is a safer option. Using this time wisely you can explore the Leh city which would take you 1 whole day. (Check our travel vlog to see what to do in Leh for a day).

  • Permits: You need permits to enter any area of Ladakh. Permits can be taken completely online by paying the fees. It is better to take the permits before hand to the places you would be exploring in Ladakh.

  • Weather Conditions: The weather conditions over here are very drastic., if you are traveling by road be ready to challenge this weather as it can snow any moment or be ready to expect a landslide. Roads may be closed due to snowfall or other adverse weather conditions.

  • Health Precautions: Carry essential medications, especially for altitude sickness. This is recommended by others opinion. In my opinion and my expertise these medications weren't of any use as we were prone to mountain sickness even after taking them. Vomiting is very normal, so nothing to be scarred of.

Exploring Ladakh: A Journey Beyond Limits

Always check the latest information regarding routes, permits, and weather conditions before planning your journey, A talk with you driver and other drivers in the local Leh is recommended to know about the road & weather conditions.

Best Time to Visit Ladakh:

The best time to visit Leh depends on your preferences and the type of activities you want to engage in. Leh, being a high-altitude desert region, experiences extreme weather conditions, and the accessibility of the region depends on the season. Here are the main seasons in Leh:

  1. Summer (Late May to Early September):

    • This is the main tourist season in Leh.

    • The weather is relatively mild, and daytime temperatures can range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F).

    • Leh is most green at this time. Puga Valley is a must visit as its completely green.

    • Most of the tourist activities, road trips, and trekking options are open during this time.

    • June to August is considered the peak tourist season.

  2. Autumn (Late September to October):

    • This period sees a decrease in tourist numbers.

    • The weather is still pleasant during the day, but nights can get chilly. (10°C to 20°C)

    • It's a good time for those who prefer a quieter experience.

  3. Late Autumn (November):

    • As winter approaches, tourism decreases. People move to the city as its warmer there.  Temeperature ranges around -5°C to 10°C

    • Daytime temperatures start dropping, and some accommodations and facilities may close. 20% of hotels start closing down at this time. Only home stays, and a few luxury hotels operate.

    • If you don't mind the cold and are looking for a more solitary experience, this could be an option.

  4. Winter (December to March):

    • Winter is extremely cold, and many parts of Leh become inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. Temperatures range around  -20°C to -7°C.

    • Only the road from Leh to Pangong Lake may remain open, depending on weather conditions.

    • Winter is suitable for those interested in experiencing the unique winter landscapes and cultural aspects of Ladakh.

    • In my opinion this is the best time to visit Ladakh. True beauty of an Indian Destination can be witnessed. At the same time, I would recommend you taking a 4*4 car as 4*2 would be very difficult to drive through the snow,

    • A Experienced driver is a must with a confident will-power to face the upcoming challenges of the Winter, (We had explored Ladakh in the winter, and also had seen the worst of it. But it was our best experience of all our travel).

My Ladakh

It's important to note that the Manali-Leh Highway and the Srinagar-Leh Highway are usually open only from late May to early October, making these months the most practical for road travel to Leh. If you're planning a trip to Leh, consider your interests, the type of activities you want to engage in, and your tolerance for cold weather to choose the most suitable time for your visit. Additionally, be aware of the potential of altitude sickness and take the necessary precautions, especially during the first few days of your stay.
